Future-Proofing Military Data Centers with 400G Fiber Performance
As the Air Force 480 Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing planned its next-generation communications infrastructure, it required a highly scalable, mission-critical network capable of supporting rapidly growing bandwidth demands. Panduit partnered with Special Communications Mission Solutions (SCMS) to deliver an advanced fiber infrastructure based on OM4+ Signature Core™ Fiber Optic Cabling. The solution successfully demonstrated transmission performance far beyond traditional multimode expectations, enabling migration to 400G networks while protecting infrastructure investments for the future.
Challenges
- Existing network infrastructure lacked the scalability required for future mission systems and increasing bandwidth demands.
- Data center cabling needed to support desktop distances up to 165 meters while maintaining high performance.
- Multiple network classifications required enhanced security, identification, and operational flexibility.
- The organization required a future-proof platform capable of supporting evolving virtualization, cloud services, and intelligence operations for at least 15 years.
Solution
- Implemented OM4+ Fiber Optic Cabling to support high-speed, long-distance data transport.
- Conducted extensive 100G and 400G performance validation testing to verify real-world deployment requirements.
- Developed custom communications hub solutions to accommodate frequent operational reconfiguration and evolving mission requirements.
- Provided color-coded and keyed connectivity solutions to improve network identification and security.
Outcome
- Demonstrated successful 400G transmission performance over distances up to 400 meters.
- Enabled future migration to 400G Ethernet without replacing fixed cabling infrastructure.
- Increased operational flexibility through custom-designed communications hub solutions.
- Delivered a cost-effective, lower-risk path for scaling bandwidth requirements over the next 15 years.
Challenges
Military and intelligence organizations continue to experience exponential growth in bandwidth consumption driven by cloud services, virtualization, real-time video, advanced analytics, and mission-critical communications. The Air Force 480 Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing required a communications infrastructure capable of supporting increasing data requirements without frequent infrastructure replacement. Existing network architectures lacked the scalability needed for future operational demands and emerging technologies.
The organization also faced challenges associated with long cable runs, complex connectivity channels, stringent federal and military requirements, and the need to support multiple secure networks. Maintaining performance while enabling future growth presented a significant design challenge.
“At half the cost of a single mode fiber optic channel, Multimode Fiber Optic Cabling has provided us the ability to implement state-of-the-art architectures and expand the layout options. We now have the reliability, flexibility, and future-proofing that we were previously missing."

Special Communications Mission Solutions (SCMS)
The Panduit Strategy and Solution:
Panduit collaborated with Special Communications Mission Solutions and the broader project team to engineer a future-ready communications platform based on OM4+ Fiber Optic Cabling. Early testing at a communications hub in Virginia validated 100G transmission performance over extended distances while maintaining error-free operation.
The solution incorporated HD Flex™ fiber infrastructure, PanMPO™ connectivity, high-density enclosures, and specialized fiber components. Panduit engineers also developed custom communications hub solutions that would allow personnel to rapidly reconfigure workstation locations and network layouts as mission requirements evolved.
The Implementation
As project requirements developed, Panduit worked closely with stakeholders to design and deploy a scalable architecture supporting multiple classified networks and future bandwidth growth. Custom products were created to improve accessibility, simplify moves, adds, and changes, and provide greater deployment flexibility.
To support operational requirements, Panduit manufactured specialized color-coded cable solutions and implemented connector keying to simplify network identification while supporting enhanced security objectives. Extensive onsite validation testing was conducted throughout deployment to ensure all performance and reliability requirements were achieved.
The Outcome
The completed infrastructure delivered exceptional performance and scalability. Testing confirmed successful operation at both 100G and 400G speeds, with 400G transmission demonstrated over distances reaching 400 meters. The resulting architecture provides the Air Force with a scalable platform capable of supporting future Ethernet and Fiber Channel requirements without replacing the fixed cabling plant.
By investing in a high-performance fiber foundation, the organization gained the flexibility, reliability, and future-proofing needed to support mission requirements for years to come while reducing operational risk and long-term infrastructure costs.
