Accelerating Industrial Construction with Reliable Installation Tools
A leading industrial contractor needed reliable grounding and installation tools for a large liquified natural gas (LNG) construction project in Texas. Panduit provided a StructuredGround system and BlackFin® battery-powered hydraulic crimping tools designed for demanding environments. The solution helped reduce downtime, support worker safety, and improve installation speed.
Challenges
- Deploy a solid grounding solution that met UL 467 and IEEE 837-2014 requirements.
- Replace unreliable crimping tools that frequently broke and slowed production.
- Keep work moving in harsh outdoor conditions, including heat, humidity, dirt, and mud.
- Complete construction activities within an aggressive project schedule.
Solution
- Implemented the StructuredGround Direct Burial Compression Grounding System.
- Used BlackFin battery-powered hydraulic crimping tools for grounding installations.
- Added safety, identification, cable management, copper cabling, and fiber connectivity solutions.
- Selected tools with safety and reliability features, including quick motor stop, auto piston retraction, and visual/audible indicators.
Outcome
- Reduced downtime caused by tool failures.
- Improved installation speed and field productivity.
- Supported reliable grounding performance in a demanding industrial environment.
- Helped maintain project schedule and ROI goals.
Challenges
A large industrial contractor was selected to support a multi-billion-dollar liquefied natural gas export facility in Texas. The project required a grounding system that could withstand corrosive elements, fault surges, construction-related damage, and demanding site conditions. The contractor also needed to replace installation tools that broke often, increased costs, and slowed production. With a tight construction schedule, delays could put project budget and project ROI goals at risk.
The Panduit Strategy and Solution
Panduit recommended the StructuredGround Direct Burial Compression Grounding System to provide a reliable below-floor grounding path. The system supports connection reliability and meets IEEE 837-2014 and UL 467 grounding requirements. The contractor used the system to bond copper conductors, reinforcing bars, ground rods, and building steel while addressing site risks such as corrosive forces, fault surges, freeze-thaw cycles, and construction equipment damage.
“The BlackFin installation tools have been substantially more reliable than our previous tools. We could not be happier to have made the switch.”

Implementation
Panduit also recommended BlackFin battery-powered hydraulic crimping tools to improve reliability and reduce field interruptions. The tools provided the crimping force needed for certified connections and allowed more crimps on a single battery charge. Safety and usability features included quick motor stop, no-slip grips, rotating crimp head, auto piston retraction, LED maintenance notification, and visual and audible crimp completion signals. Additional Panduit cable ties, identification, safety, copper cabling, and fiber connectivity solutions supported broader site requirements.
Outcome
By adopting Panduit grounding, installation, identification, safety, and connectivity solutions, the contractor improved installation speed and reduced downtime. The BlackFin tools helped provide more reliable field performance than the previous tools, while the grounding system supported dependable infrastructure performance. The solution helped the contractor continue to work efficiently, support worker safety, and stay aligned to aggressive project milestones.
