Setting the Standard: Panduit Accelerates Cable Cleat Validation Program
TINLEY PARK, Ill. — October 5, 2026 — Panduit Corp., a global leader in electrical and network infrastructure solutions, today announced a significant milestone in its cable cleat validation program: the successful short-circuit testing of 50 cable cleat SKUs in accordance with requirements defined by the emerging UL DWMU/7 cable cleat standard.
As electrical infrastructure systems become more complex and fault current levels continue to rise, engineers are under increasing pressure to design cable restraint systems that help protect people, equipment, and operations during fault events. Representing approximately 80% of Panduit’s cable cleat portfolio, this achievement reinforces the company’s commitment to advancing electrical safety and industry standardization across critical infrastructure applications.
Panduit expects to complete short-circuit testing on an additional 10 cable cleat SKUs in the next phase. This work will bring much of its portfolio into alignment with emerging industry requirements and customer expectations while giving engineers greater confidence in specifying cable restraint solutions.
Advancing Safety Through Performance Validation
Short-circuit events generate extreme electromagnetic forces in industrial power distribution systems. Without properly engineered cable restraints, these forces can cause cable whips, tray damage, secondary faults, equipment damage, unplanned downtime, and greater safety risks.
“As electrical infrastructure systems grow more complex and fault current levels continue to rise, customers need confidence that cable restraint solutions have been rigorously evaluated under demanding conditions,” said Chris Bentley, senior engineer for cable cleats at Panduit. “Our comprehensive testing program reflects Panduit’s commitment to helping customers deploy safer, more reliable cable management systems backed by validated performance data.”
Cable cleats secure and support power cables during normal operation and fault conditions. Live short-circuit testing verifies that a cable cleat system can withstand the mechanical loads generated by electrical faults while preserving cable support and system integrity.
Electrical Codes Continue to Drive Cable Restraint Requirements
The National Electrical Code (NEC) includes requirements intended to help prevent excessive cable movement caused by magnetic forces during a fault. NEC Article 392.20 states: “Single conductor cables shall be securely bound in circuit groups to prevent excessive movement due to fault current magnetic forces.” Engineers are responsible for designing systems with appropriate cable restraint solutions that address applicable project requirements and code considerations.
To simplify specifications, Panduit offers an online tool that helps engineers evaluate cable cleat selection and spacing recommendations for specific applications. Using key application inputs, the Panduit Cleat KAlculator helps users identify solutions that support effective cable restraint system design.
Continuing Legacy of Engineering Leadership
Panduit has long been committed to advancing electrical infrastructure design through engineering expertise, standards of participation, and product innovation. The company’s cable cleat testing program previously validated cable cleat systems to the original IEC 61914 standard, as well as CSA and NEMA standards introduced in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Panduit plans to pursue UL Listing after completing the applicable evaluation, documentation, and witness-testing requirements associated with the program. These plans are subject to change based on testing outcomes, program requirements, and other factors. This work represents a major step toward supporting customers as industry requirements continue to evolve.
“Our customers are seeking solutions that reduce risk, improve reliability, and align with evolving industry standards,” said Andrew Booth, Panduit senior manager of business development and Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and Senior Member of IEEE.
Booth also leads the UL DWMU/7 cable cleat focus group and has contributed his expertise to cable cleat working groups for CSA, NEMA, IEC, and CENELEC. “By investing in extensive short-circuit testing today, Panduit is helping establish a foundation for safer, more resilient electrical infrastructure in the future.”
Important Notice: The cable cleats referenced in this announcement underwent short-circuit testing in accordance with applicable requirements of the emerging UL DWMU/7 Cable Cleat category. Completion of this testing does not constitute or imply UL Listing, Certification, Classification, or any other formal approval. The testing represents only one component of the comprehensive evaluation and documentation required to participate in a formal listing program.
