Q: What is UL certification, and why does it matter for power systems?

Bob: UL certification is an independent verification that a product meets strict safety and performance standards. For fault managed power systems like Panduit FMPS, UL 1400-1 ensure that our equipment limits hazardous energy during faults, reducing fire risks and electrical hazards. It’s a critical step in gaining trust from inspectors, contractors, and end users.

 

Q: What makes UL 1400-1 unique?

Bob: UL 1400-1 is the first standard developed specifically for Fault Managed Power Systems. It focuses on system-level safety, like fault detection, power limitation, and thermal management. Panduit worked closely with UL Solutions to shape this standard and became the world’s first company to earn UL 1400-1 certification for FMPS. That’s a big deal because it sets the benchmark for the entire industry.

 

Q: How does UL certification impact project timelines?

Bob: UL-listed FMP systems simplify permitting and inspections. When a product is UL-certified, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) are more likely to approve it quickly. That means fewer delays, faster approvals, and less risk for contractors and facility managers.

 

Q: What role did Panduit play in developing UL 1400-1?

Bob: We weren’t just a participant, we were a partner. Our engineers collaborated directly with UL Solutions to define the testing procedures and safety thresholds for Class 4 power. That proactive approach helped shape the UL 1400-1 and UL 1400-2 standards, and it reflects our commitment to leading the future of power distribution.

Bob: UL testing validates that Panduit FMPS can detect faults and limit energy before it becomes dangerous. That means less risk of fire, reduced electrical hazards, and greater peace of mind for everyone involved, from installers to building occupants.
