Why Now is the Time for MTDC Operators to Double Down on Sustainability Initiatives

The pressure is on for organizations across industries and geographies to develop, implement, measure, and report on the progress of their sustainability initiatives. Multi-tenant data centers (MTDCs) are no exception, which is why operators are increasingly focused on reducing carbon emissions and utilizing energy efficient cooling solutions.

Calculating the Costs of Cooling

Did you know that energy costs related to cooling account for nearly 37% of the overall data center power consumption? They’re also the fastest rising data center operation expense. These are key reasons why many MTDC providers are implementing advanced cooling systems that optimize air flow with smart sensors. In fact, a recent 451 Research survey revealed that nearly 50% of MTDC operators are potentially making changes to what cooling systems they buy.

451 Research also found that nearly one third of MTDC operators say their customers want contractually binding commitments to sustainability. Regulatory agencies, industry watchdogs and even investors also expect MTDC providers to decrease their environmental footprint and clearly communicate their sustainability commitments. Some government agencies offer financing for projects that reduce carbon footprint or improve energy efficiency.

Participating in voluntary sustainability reporting frameworks such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an effective way to determine what data to track and how, as well as provide results in a manner that is consistent with what these organizations want to see. Check out our blog post Three Ways Colocation Providers Can Show their Sustainability Smarts for more on this topic.

Sustainable Innovations at Panduit

At Panduit, we’ve been mobilizing the talent and resources across the company to engineer and bring to market products designed to help our customers advance their environmental sustainability goals. Thermal optimization solutions such as cold aisle containment, for example, govern and reduce energy consumption, which also prevents energy costs from skyrocketing. Pre-configured data center solutions, including recently launched FlexFusion™ Cabinets, as well as the industry’s only EPD and HPD-certified cables and connectors, are purpose-built for the environmentally aware economy.

This post is the first in a series focused on sustainability strategies, solutions and success stories for MTDC operators. Be sure to subscribe above for updates so you don’t miss our next post on how to reclaim underutilized cooling capacity and reduce energy expenses. In the meantime, visit our website to learn more about our sustainability-focused solutions for MTDCs and our other Environment, Social, and Governance initiatives designed to empower our customers, our partners and employees to succeed in a sustainable and connected world.
